About Us

What is a Super PAC?

A super PAC is officially known as an independent expenditure-only political action committee.

Unlike traditional political action committees (PACs), super PACs can raise unlimited donations from individuals, corporations, unions, and other groups.

Super PACs are permitted to spend on advertising for or against political candidates so long as they do not coordinate with or contribute directly to candidate campaigns or political parties.

More than a decade ago, two judicial decisions made super PACs possible. The first decision was Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission and the second decision weeks later was Speechnow.org v. FEC. The federal Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit held that PACs that did not contribute to candidates, parties, or other PACs could indeed accept unlimited contributions from individuals, unions, and for-profit and non-profit corporations to make independent expenditures.

However, super PACs are subject to the same organizational, reporting, and public disclosure requirements as traditional PACs.
